District wise fish production in Kerala 2022-23

Observations

  1. Total Fish Production: The overall fish production in Kerala for 2022-23 is 690,945 tonnes for marine fish and 229,578 tonnes for inland fish.
  2. Marine Fish Production Leaders:
    • Ernakulam stands out with the highest marine fish production at 206,003 tonnes.
    • Kollam and Kozhikkode also show significant marine production, at 143,373 tonnes and 116,372 tonnes, respectively.
  3. Inland Fish Production Leaders:
    • Kottayam leads inland fish production with 50,808 tonnes, followed by Alappuzha at 43,309 tonnes.
    • Kasargode also has a notable inland production figure of 48,930 tonnes.
  4. Zero Marine Production: Several districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Palakkad, reported no marine fish production.
  5. Variability in Production: There is a significant variation in both marine and inland fish production across districts, indicating potential regional strengths and weaknesses in fishery resources.

Conclusion

Kerala’s fish production in 2022-23 is heavily skewed towards marine sources, with Ernakulam being the major contributor. Inland fish production is robust in districts like Kottayam and Alappuzha. The absence of marine fish production in several districts suggests an opportunity to enhance fisheries development and sustainability strategies in those areas. Overall, targeted interventions could help balance production across regions and optimize resource utilization.
