Communicable Disease Cases and Deaths in Kerala

In 2023, Kerala reported a high burden of communicable diseases. Acute diarrheal disease had the highest number of cases (4.86 lakh) but only 2 deaths. Dengue (confirmed and probable) accounted for over 58,000 cases and 165 deaths. Leptospirosis, both confirmed and probable, caused 282 deaths from 5,186 cases, indicating a high fatality rate. Rabies, although with fewer cases (25), resulted in all 25 deaths. Influenza A (H1N1) also had a significant mortality rate with 68 deaths from 1,036 cases. Overall, while some diseases had high incidence with low mortality, others like leptospirosis, rabies, and H1N1 had high fatality rates, warranting targeted public health interventions.
