Enrolment of girls at different levels

Observations:

  1. Primary Education (LP and UP):
    • The Lower Primary (LP) level has the highest total enrolment (1,308,415) and the highest number of girls (642,618).
    • The Upper Primary (UP) level follows with 1,169,557 total enrolments and 575,719 girls.
    • Girls represent a consistent and significant proportion at both levels.
  2. High School and Higher Secondary (HS and HSS):
    • The High School (HS) level enrolment is 1,268,675, with girls accounting for 619,328. This is slightly lower than LP but still substantial.
    • The Higher Secondary School (HSS) level sees a sharp decline, with 384,556 total enrolments and 195,357 girls. This could indicate dropouts or transitions to other educational streams.
  3. Vocational and Technical Education:
    • The Vocational Higher Secondary School (VHSS) enrolment is low (28,059 total, 10,871 girls), reflecting limited participation in vocational programs.
    • Technical High Schools have the lowest enrolment overall, with only 7,924 students and a mere 504 girls enrolled.
  4. Proportion of Girls:
    • The proportion of girls remains relatively high at the LP, UP, and HS levels but decreases significantly in HSS, VHSS, and Technical High Schools.

Conclusions:

    • Girls have strong representation in general primary and high school education, making up nearly 50% of the enrolment at these levels.
    • However, their participation drops sharply in higher education and technical/vocational streams, suggesting potential barriers like access, social norms, or lack of interest.
    • Efforts are needed to retain girls in the educational system beyond HS, particularly in HSS and vocational/technical education.
    • Encouraging girls to pursue technical and vocational education could help bridge gender gaps in specialized skills.
    • Scholarships, awareness programs, and initiatives to make technical education more accessible and appealing to girls could be effective.
