  • Old Age Homes have the highest number of inmates with 32,032 (52% of the total), showing that elderly care is the largest social welfare requirement in Kerala.

  • Institutions for the differently abled accommodate 14,131 inmates (23%), the second highest category, highlighting the demand for disability-related welfare.

  • Other significant categories include Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Institutions (8.8%) and Institutions for Mentally Challenged (4.5%), while Foundling Homes and Nirbhaya Shelter Homes account for less than 2% each.

  • The total sanctioned strength (1,00,536) is much higher than actual inmates (61,785), indicating an occupancy rate of about 61%, with available capacity underutilized.
