Trends in Abortions

From 2014–15 to 2023–24, pregnant women registrations in HMIS fell by 16%, while total abortions rose by 76%, mainly due to an eightfold increase in induced abortions. Induced cases, now 67% of all abortions, reflect improved access and reporting—especially in private facilities, which handle nearly 75% of them. Meanwhile, spontaneous abortions declined by 33%. The data suggest changing reproductive choices, better service availability, and highlight the need to strengthen public sector abortion care for equitable access.
