Distribution of Rice, Wheat, Kerosene, and Sugar through PDS in Kerala (2014-2024)

1. Rice Distribution (MT)
•    From 2014-15 to 2022-23, the distribution of rice fluctuates, peaking at 13.28 lakh metric tons in 2014-15 and declining gradually over the years.

•    A sharp decline is noted in 2022-23 at 8.68 million metric tons, and further in 2023-24 (up to August) at 4.87 lakh metric tons.
2. Wheat Distribution (MT)
•    Wheat distribution reached its highest point in 2015-16 at 2.52 lakh metric tons, followed by fluctuations in subsequent years.

•    In 2022-23, wheat distribution surged to 16.85 lakh metric tons, an exceptional increase.
•    In 2023-24 (up to August), wheat distribution stands at 47,480 metric tons, showing a drop from the previous year's high.
3. Kerosene Distribution (KL)
•    Kerosene distribution has been declining consistently from 94,077 kiloliters in 2014-15 to 15,552 kiloliters in 2022-23.

•    In 2023-24 (up to August), only 2,418 kiloliters have been distributed.
4. Sugar Distribution (MT)
•    Sugar distribution peaked at 55,255 metric tons in 2014-15 and has been decreasing overall.

•    In recent years, sugar distribution remained relatively low, with 7,133 metric tons in 2022-23 and 2,775 metric tons in 2023-24 (up to August).

Conclusion:

•    Rice and Wheat: The distribution patterns of rice and wheat have seen fluctuations over the years. There has been a significant increase in wheat distribution in 2022-23, while rice distribution has shown a general declining trend.

•    Kerosene: The consistent decline in kerosene distribution suggests a transition away from traditional fuels towards alternatives.

•    Sugar: The drop in sugar distribution indicates either reduced consumption or government allocation for sugar under the PDS.
The data suggests changes in government policies and shifting consumer demand patterns for food grains, kerosene, and sugar in Kerala. Additionally, 2023-24 figures are partial and should be evaluated once the full year's data is available.
