Cargo Handled at the Intermediate and Minor Ports of Kerala (in Tonne)

Observations:

  1. Import Trends:
    • Imports saw significant fluctuations. The most notable peak occurred in 2017 with 106,663 tonnes, representing 26.31% of total cargo.
    • The lowest import was in 2021 with only 8,193 tonnes, which is only 16.59% of total cargo that year.
    • There was a notable rebound in 2022 with imports increasing to 57,253 tonnes.
  2. Export Trends:
    • Exports have been the dominant component of total cargo throughout the years, consistently making up a large majority (over 70%) of the total.
    • The highest export figure was in 2017 with 298,799 tonnes (73.69%), while 2021 recorded the lowest exports at 41,187 tonnes.
    • A significant recovery in exports was observed in 2022, reaching 265,538 tonnes, which is a substantial increase from 2021.
  3. Total Cargo Trends:
    • The total cargo handled peaked in 2017 at 405,462 tonnes.
    • The year 2021 experienced a dramatic decrease in total cargo, with only 49,380 tonnes, likely influenced by the global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • The total cargo in 2022 rebounded to 322,791 tonnes, indicating a recovery phase.
  4. Percentage Share Dynamics:
    • The percentage share of imports increased dramatically from 2.76% in 2016 to a peak of 43.47% in 2019, before dropping again.
    • Conversely, the export percentage share declined from 97.24% in 2016 to a low of 56.53% in 2019, but it remained relatively stable in the following years.
  5. Overall Trends:
    • The data reflects a general trend of volatility, with significant fluctuations in both imports and exports influenced by external factors, possibly including economic conditions and global events such as the pandemic.
    • The data suggests a recovery in the port's operations post-2021, particularly in terms of exports.

Conclusion:

The Intermediate and Minor Ports of Kerala show a dynamic cargo handling pattern influenced by both domestic and global conditions. While exports remain the primary focus, the fluctuations in imports suggest a need for monitoring and strategic planning to enhance port operations and resilience against external shocks. The recovery seen in 2022 is a positive sign for future cargo handling activities.
